What is Hypnosis? How can it be helpful?
There is generally no one agreed upon definition of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a tool used by clinicians to teach or initiate changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts and behaviors. It is a state of absorption, concentration and relaxation used to access the change. It can be a powerful tool used to create effective change. When in a trance state you are aware of what you are doing, in control and can communicate with the therapist. It allows you to be in trance state, to lower our defenses and critical, negative thinking to access change faster. It is a goal-oriented tool.
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis. The most common myth is “I can’t be hypnotized.” The example I often use is: Driving while absorbed deeply in thought or getting lost in your own imagination is a form of self-hypnosis. Along with this, you will not do anything you do not want or would not normally do. Stage performers make it seem magical and represent exactly what hypnosis is NOT!
Hypnosis is not an instant cure. There is no “one size fits all” treatment for every behavior (i.e., depression, anxiety, quitting smoking, etc.). Corrective behavior takes some time and work.
